Commitment

1

The size of the bonito

In spring, young 2-3kg first-catch bonito; in autumn, richly fatty 4-5kg returning bonito, carefully selected by season.

2

Raw bonito from Kochi

Most Kochi bonito is pole-and-line caught, leaving it beautiful and undamaged. We ship our select bonito direct from the port.

3

Straw from Shiga

We use straw hand-cut ourselves from vast contracted fields in Kohoku, northern Shiga. Dried straw burns hot with the finest smoky aroma.

4

The grilling

Over straw flames reaching 1000 degrees, we sear a crust about 5mm into the flesh, then finish with residual heat to lock in flavor.

5

The thickness of the cut

Cut over 1cm thick so the straw aroma fills your mouth, brimming with bonito flavor and a springy texture.

6

Our chosen salt

A fully sun-dried salt handmade by artisans from Kochi seawater. We select larger crystals for a mellow mineral taste.

Service

01

Robata & Warayaki

Bonito from Kochi and Omi beef from Shiga, grilled over straw right before you. Seasonal fish and vegetables draw out their fullest flavor over charcoal.

02

Sake & Local Brews

A generous selection of sake chosen from across Japan, including local Shiga brews — from dry to sweet. Our staff suggest the one glass that suits your dish, so you can enjoy sake tasting in Ishiyama. Sake-friendly bites such as seared Hakata mentaiko are ready to pair.

03

Seafood & Sashimi

Fresh fish shipped straight from the port, finished into sashimi by skilled hands. Enjoy seafood in landlocked Shiga in seasonal plates such as our five-kind sashimi platter.

04

Omi Beef & Omi Chicken

Shiga's specialty Omi beef, straw-grilled or miso-marinated, and overnight-dried Omi chicken. Enjoy Shiga's premium ingredients dynamically over charcoal in Ishiyama.

05

Banquets & Private Hire

Relaxed table and open-terrace seating, banquet courses with free-flow drinks, and full-venue bookings (50+) on request. Steps from Ishiyama Station — ideal for company parties and gatherings. Plenty of shareable plates, such as our fried chicken, round out the table.

How to enjoy Robata

Robata Story

01

One minute from either station, then to the hearth

About a minute on foot from the south exit of JR Ishiyama Station, and about a minute from Keihan Ishiyama Station. Once inside the 78 seat room, go and stand where the straw flames rise.

02

Tosa-Saga bonito, exactly as it comes

The bonito is shipped direct from Tosa-Saga port in Kochi. Begin at the smoke-wrapped surface, with nothing added, and confirm the sweetness of the fish itself.

03

Bring in condiments, rock salt and citrus

Change the flavor for the second half. Straw-grilled Omi beef from Shiga also finishes lighter with rock salt and a squeeze of citrus.

04

A cup on the open terrace

Counter, table and sofa seats, plus an open terrace. Cigarettes are allowed on the terrace only, and it suits a drink after a walk along the Seta River or the Seta no Karahashi bridge.

Producers

Practical Steps: A Checklist and Booking Tips for Finding Your Perfect Private Room

To help you make the most of our private rooms and have the best possible time, here are some key points for choosing a room and a guide to a smooth booking process. As an Ishiyama izakaya, we hope you'll find this useful for ensuring a more comfortable and satisfying visit.

Checklist for Choosing a Private Room

  1. Clarify Your Purpose: Think about your main priority—is it a date, business entertainment, a family meal, drinks with friends, or a party? Whether you want to talk quietly or have a lively celebration will determine the best room for you.

  2. Confirm the Number of Guests: Knowing the exact number of people will help you choose a room that is neither too large nor too small. We have private rooms available for groups of 2 to a maximum of 20.

  3. Consider Your Preferred Room Type: Think in advance about whether you prefer a completely enclosed fully private room, a semi-private room with a more open feel, or tatami mat versus table seating.

  4. Set a Budget: Deciding on a budget per person will help you narrow down your options for course menus and all-you-can-drink plans. We can accommodate a wide range of needs, from luxurious seafood-focused courses to casual à la carte dining.

  5. Check for Special Requests: If you have any special requests—such as allergies, dietary restrictions, surprise arrangements, private bookings, or the use of equipment like a projector—be sure to mention them when you book.

Steps for a Smooth Booking

  1. Book Early: Private rooms are in high demand, especially on weekends, holidays, and during peak seasons (year-end/New Year, welcome/farewell party season). Our rooms can be fully booked up to two weeks in advance for weekends. Please contact us as soon as your desired date is decided.

  2. Book by Phone or Online: When you book by phone, our staff can consult with you directly to suggest the best room for your needs. Online reservations are also available 24/7 through our website.

  3. Provide Details When Booking: Clearly state your purpose, number of guests, preferred room type, budget, and any other special requests. For example, saying, I'd like to book a quiet two-person private room for a date at an Ishiyama izakaya makes the process smoother.

  4. Confirm Your Reservation: Once your booking is complete, please double-check the date, time, number of guests, room type, and course details. We may also contact you to confirm.

  5. Don't Hesitate to Ask Questions: If you have any questions about the room's atmosphere, food, or drinks, please feel free to inquire at any time, either when booking or before your visit. As an Otsu izakaya, we strive to resolve any concerns so you can visit us with peace of mind.
